McKinley Elementary School Garden Project
In February 2010, Living Better Lives assisted in the creation of the McKinley Elementary School Garden in San Jose California. This gardening project is designed to educate the youth about the importance of agriculture, enhance science lessons with hands on opportunities and to build a deeper understanding of the connection between food and nutrition.
We've had a great success partnering with other organizations in the community including Veggielution, Slow Foods and San Jose State University Health Science Department. In combined efforts with SJSU Salud Familiar students we were able to secure a grant from the City of San Jose to begin the program.
With the help of all of the awesome volunteers and wonderful parents and families of McKinley School we plan to continue this program for years to come. With the combined efforts of the community groups mentioned the program was able to expand from serving 4th through 6th graders in the 2010-2011 school year to serving students in grades Kindergarten through 6th grade, almost 500 students in total during the this school year!
In time we will expand to neighboring schools and continue to teach the children of our community the importance of healthy living!
