Current Projects

The Sister School Program-The goal of the Sister School program is to enrich the educational and cultural experience of children in low income neighborhoods in the San Francisco Bay Area and children in rural schools in developing countries, specifically those of Eastern Africa. The schools will be provided with materials to enrich their classroom environment, develop sports programs, and have the opportunity to become more aware of their global community.

Sowing the Seeds-Living Better Lives aims to provide rural farmers with manual pumps to increase their income by allowing them to harvest multiple times throughout the year. For $200USD, a farmer can receive a water pump that will enable them to: utilize their natural resources, increase profits bringing them away from poverty and starvation and create and maintain a self-sufficient life. These manually operated pumps are already in use in countries like Tanzania, Kenya and Mali.

Project History

Classroom Enrichment December 2008-During a visit to Ethiopia in December 2008, volunteers distributed over 700 pens to teachers and students at a rural school in the Amhara Region. The staff and students were enthusiastic to receive such a simple gift as they do not have access to the basic needs of their school.

Sowing the Seeds Summer 2008- Many Ethiopian farmers lost their seed stock due to drought. Living Better Lives provided 24 Ethiopian farmers in the Amhara Region with seeds in time to replant and have a productive harvest. We replenished many of their traditional varieties as well as introduced new varieties of vegetables. Agricultural education classes were provided to demonstrate proper planting techniques and to encourage farmers to grow for seed for the following year.
